Defining the definition of management information system

Machine shop information is all about production and mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering is a very broad profession.

As such machine shop information concerns a huge amount of managers, engineers, technicians, operators in all walks of life.

You may be surprised to learn that mechanical engineers work in pretty much almost every industry, manufacturing, government, medicine and of course private practice. To name but a few.

RESEARCH:
Engineers in research collate information for the purpose of gaining insights and knowledge about new systems and their operation. In many ways, the work of research engineers and scientists are very similar.

DEVELOPMENT:
In development, engineers will use research results to build prototype devices or systems to prove viability of a proposed solution to a problem. More often than not, this is the time when the majority of modifications to methods and approach will take place. Even halting and complete rethinking with more research. Development engineers often work closely with research engineers.

DESIGN:
In design, engineers conceive the first version of the final machines, systems or approaches that development has showed will solve a specific problem. The solution is defined and quantified by being put into drawings and/or equations.

TESTING:
The testing phase is as the name suggests. To test a development device or a full size completed machine and operate it normally and to extremes to discover its performance under all possible conditions. Testing can mean finding out how much the machine can take before it breaks or fails to define safe loading limits. Finding out how safe a machine is under unusual operating conditions can be crucial.

MANUFACTURING:
Production engineers will select the equipment and machines that will manufacture the finished product. This can range from building a micro device to a full factory assembly line to a machine tool. Engineering concerns within manufacturing are mainly concerned with production efficiency, economics and safety. This is an ideal place for a machine shop information system to be very well implemented and put to good use.

OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE:
Some systems, equipment and operations require continual monitoring and maintenance in order to remain functional. Many mechanical engineers perform this very necessary task in power plants and advanced or specialized manufacturing sites.

MARKETING & SALES:
Machines and systems that require skilled operation due being complex, often need a sales and marketing force with detailed technical experience. These are the engineers that will help customers design the optimum product or machine for their needs, supplying technical support, installation and training.

ADMINISTRATION:
In many companies of a specialized technical nature and organizations in technical fields, mechanical engineers are quite often involved in the supervision and coordination of the work of others. Companies of a technical nature often recruit their managers and senior executives from the ranks of the original hands on engineering staff.

MACHINE SHOP INFORMATION:
All of these areas of assignment are crying out for machine resources and information feedback, not only is it advantageous in the early stages but an efficient automated cross referenced machine information system can save weeks, months, even years in monitoring and reporting manually.
